Clive Arrowsmith, L’Âme des Grands

Clive Arrowsmith rime avec tous les plus grands noms de la planète : il a photographié Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Sa Sainteté le Dalaï Lama, le Prince Charles, Yves Saint Laurent, Alain Delon pour ne citer qu’eux et travaille pour Harpers Bazaar et Vogue, entre autres. Il a aussi réalisé deux calendriers Pirelli deux années de suite.

Clive Arrowsmith, c’est aussi un livre "ARROWSMITH Fashion Beauty and Portraits" et un autre qui va sortir au mois de juin sur le célèbre peintre anglais L.S Lowry.

Cet homme aux milles vies, devenu bouddhiste grâce à son ami Georges Harrison, est chez Maison Sensey et nous en sommes heureux et fier.

Comment décririez-vous votre travail et vous-même ?

Mon travail est une obsession. Je suis un obsessionnel un peu rêveur.

Comment définiriez-vous le cliché parfait ?

Il n'existe pas, c'est ce à quoi je m'efforce mais je ne l'obtiendrais jamais. Si cela pouvait être atteint, il ne serait pas nécessaire de continuer. Je peux m’en rapprocher, mais parce que nous n'obtenons jamais le coup parfait, cela nous oblige à continuer.

Il y a un dicton en français selon lequel les rides sont l'histoire de quelqu'un; quel portrait vous a offert le plus de vécu, d’histoire ?

Mon portrait de Michael Caine. L'histoire est l'image, vous ne pouvez pas décrire cette photo, l'image raconte l'histoire.

J'ai été très émue lorsque j'ai découvert votre travail pour la première fois, j'ai estimé que vos photographies étaient plus proches émotionnellement de la peinture. La peinture influence-t-elle sur votre travail, et de quelle manière ?

J’ai commencé comme élève peintre dans une école d'art depuis cinq ans puis j'ai découvert une photographie que j'avais précédemment décrite comme une forme créative mineure ; une fois que j'ai commencé à faire de la photo, la peinture s'est estompée. La lumière de la Renaissance italienne ne m'a jamais quitté. Parfois, on m'appelle le «Caravage de la photographie», ce qui me fait sourire.

Vous arrivez à transmettre l’insaisissable. Qu’est ce que vous percevez qui ne se voit pas quand vous faite un portrait ?

Je pense que c'est le fantôme de l'électricité qui leur couvre le visage, leurs passions, la tristesse et les joies, etc. que j'essaie de faire en devenant leur propre cabaret, lorsque leur sourire ou leur rire disparaît, le souvenir de ce moment est capturé par la caméra. C'est un moment qui ne peut jamais être répété.

Votre prochain livre porte sur L.S Lowry, un peintre anglais célèbre que vous avez photographié pour votre première job. Pourquoi ce livre maintenant et de quoi est-il fait ?

C'est un tournage intime de Lowry "à la maison" en 1966 (qui coïncide avec l'exposition The Lowry à Salford en juin) : le paysage industriel de Salford, près de Manchester, où le spectre de la révolution industrielle flottait toujours dans l'atmosphère, Lowry est saisi dans cet état, dans sa simple vie quotidienne. On peut voir dans son travail comment il a capturé si affectueusement les gens de cette époque. Les images du livre reflètent cela. ("Lowry At Home 1966" de Clive Arrowsmith - sortie en juin 2017 chez ACC Publishing).

Lowry a déclaré une fois: «Je peins les gens comme je les vois.» Est-ce que cela peut être dit de votre art ?

Eh bien oui, je photographie les gens comme je les vois. Ça peut paraître évident, mais on ne peut photographier que ce qui se trouve devant la caméra ; en revanche, en manipulant la lumière et l'ombre, on peut ajouter une ambiance et une dimension qui n'existaient que dans ce moment.

De toutes les personnes que vous avez photographiées, qui vous a le plus ému, et pourquoi ?

Étant bouddhiste, j’ai particulièrement aimé photographier mon professeur bouddhiste tibétain Khyongla Rato Rinpoche et Sa Sainteté le Dalaï Lama, car dans ces moments il n'y a pas de temps. Suivi par de belles femmes parce que je les vois toutes en déesses

Qui aimeriez-vous photographier ?

Laura Pergolizzi (LP), Jeff Bridges (acteur) et Christy Turlington (que je n'ai jamais eu la joie de photographier, elle a un visage aussi classique) et Beyonce. Oh mon Dieu, la liste est sans fin, ma caméra a hâte pour eux.

Qui aimeriez-vous que j'interview après vous ? Pourquoi ? Pouvez-vous me proposer deux noms ?

Je recommanderais le photographe vénérable Nicky Vreeland (moine bouddhiste, petit-fils de Diana Vreeland, éditeur légendaire de Vogue, et auteur du fil "Monk With A Camera") et Sebastião Salgado, le photographe brésilien.

How would describe your work and yourself ?

My work is an obsession. I am an obsessive and somewhat of a dreamer.

How would you define the perfect shot ?

It doesn’t exist, that’s what I'm striving for but I will never get it. If that could be achieved there would be no point continuing. I may come close but because we never get the perfect shot, it compels us to continue.

There is a saying in French according to which wrinkles tell someone’s history; which of your portraits fits best this idea? Which story was it telling ?

My portrait of Michael Caine. The story is the image, you can’t talk a picture, the picture tells the story.

I was very moved when i first discovered your work, i felt that your photographs were closer to paintings than to pictures. How much does painting influence your work, and in which way?

I trained as a painter in art school for five years then discovered photography which I had previously decried as a minor creative form, then once I began to take pictures, painting faded away. The light from the Italian Renaissance has never left me. Sometimes they call me the “Caravaggio of photography” which makes me smile.

You manage to transmit/pass on the elusive. What do you discern which is invisible when shooting someone ?

Ithink it’s the ghost of electricity that lies in their face, their passions, sadness and joys etc. which I try to bring out by becoming the cabaret for them, when their smile or laughter fades, the memory of that moment is captured by the camera. That is a moment in time that can never be repeated.

Your next book is about L.S Lowry, a famous English painte whom you photographed for your first professional assignment. Why this book now and what will it be made of ?

It’s an intimate shoot of Lowry at home in 1966 (which coincides with the exhibition The Lowry in Salford this June). The drab industrial landscape of Salford near Manchester, where the spectre of the industrial revolution still hovered in the atmosphere, and Lowry is captured in this state in his simple daily life. One can see from his work how he so affectionately captured the people of that time. The images in the book are a reflection of that. Lowry once said: “I paint people as i see them.” Can this be said of your art ?

Well I photograph them as I see them. It may be obvious but one can only photograph what is in front of the camera but by manipulating the light and shade one can add a mood and dimension, that only existed in that moment.

Of all people you have photographed, who has touched/stirred you the most, and why ?

Being a Buddhist it has to be photographing my Tibetan Buddhist teacher Khyongla Rato Rinpoche and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, because in those moments there is no time. Followed by beautiful women because I see them all as Goddesses.

Who would you like to photograph ?

Laura Pergolizzi (LP) singer, Jeff Bridges (Actor) and Christy Turlington (who I have never had the joy of photographing, she has such a classical face) and Beyonce. Oh my God, the list is endless, my camera hungers for them.

Who would you like me to interview next ? Why ? Would you suggest me two names?

I would recommend the Venerable Nicky Vreeland photographer (who is a monk and Grandson of legendary Vogue Editor Diana Vreeland, check the film ‘Monk With A Camera’) and Sebastião Salgado photographer.
