Léo Piastra, la lumière, la sensibilité et le temps

Léo Piastra est un photographe qui préfère raconter les émotions, la matière à travers la photo. Les mots ne suffisent pas pour immortaliser alors il capture des instants ou des ambiances pour faire ressortir l’essentiel.

La simplicité est pour lui proche de l’élégance. C’est avec toute simplicité que Léo a posé des mots sur ses photos.

Ça a débuté comment ?

Avec mon père qui m’a fait prendre mon premier contact avec la photo en argentique et ça a été un moyen entre lui et moi de nous lier. Il m’a donné un boîtier moyen format avec lequel j’ai pu prendre en photo mon neveu. De ce jour il m’a vraiment transmis la patience du cadrage, du déclenchement.

Quand on est photographe on a une relation un peu particulière avec le déclencheur de l’appareil. Il y a quelque chose de très puissant avec un boitier moyen format.

Après ces premiers clichés, nous avons poursuivi l’expérience en chambre noire pour développer le film et réaliser le tirage du portrait de mon neveu.

La seconde expérience est passée par l’approche du matériel et j’ai découvert le boitier numérique avec tous ses avantages et ses inconvénients.

Je me suis fixé des objectifs pour comprendre la technique de la photo. Mon père m’a offert mon premier boitier numérique avec lequel j’avais une optique de pas très bonne qualité alors j’ai adapté les objectifs argentiques dessus. Ce fût un apprentissage complètement manuel et ça a été cette contrainte là qui m’a forcé à comprendre ce que je faisais avec un appareil. J’ai eu un toucher argentique avec la photo mais avec l’avantage du numérique. Donc l’avantage de pouvoir se louper, de voir directement comment j’avais réussi une photo. J’adore apprendre tout seul et j’ai besoin de comprendre comment fonctionne quelque chose avant d’exploiter l’objet que j’utilise.

Après est venue la pratique ; sortir avec une focale fixe tout le temps et déclencher très souvent dans la rue.

La photo m’a toujours accompagné pour me faire grandir jour après jour. Il n’y a pas une journée sans que je fasse de la photo. La photo est tout simplement obsessionnelle.

Pour vous dire, j’aime beaucoup la cuisine, et j’ai toujours un déclencheur virtuel dans ma tête qui m’inspire de superbes images, toujours cette envie de figer l’instant et de mettre en avant une matière ou une ambiance.

Donc ça a débuté il y a bientôt 10 ans.

Quelle a été votre première expérience de shooting photo ?

La première fois que j’ai eu la chance de le mettre en pratique cela a été avec la Maison Mauban il y a 3 ans.

Avec Edouard Quinchon, nous avons construit l’image de Mauban. On s’est très bien entendu et on avait tout les deux à cœur de mettre en avant des détails du produit mais avec derrière un contexte, une histoire qui me semble importante pour transmettre une émotion. Et après, les choses se sont faites de façon naturelle, j’ai rencontré d’autres marques.

Comment vous arrivez à sublimer un produit ?

C’est avant tout mettre en avant la fabrication, la matière du produit. Afin d’avoir vraiment la sensation de toucher la matière, de se projeter avec le produit. C’est aussi de présenter le produit dans un contexte d’utilisation, et de construire une histoire. J’accorde beaucoup d’importance aux détails. Par exemple, si on prend la matière plastique, il y a plusieurs nuances de ce matériau et donc je m’efforce de faire ressortir ces différences pour pouvoir toucher avec les yeux. C’est la fusion de la fabrication et la matière qui m’intéressent.

Quel est l’objet qui vous a le plus fasciné à travailler ?

La chaussure est un objet qui me donne de l’émotion. A la fois à la prise de vue car j’essaie de sublimer au maximum la matière et de retranscrire ce toucher. Le cuir est une matière incroyable et il faut que cela puisse se ressentir à l’image. Et j’ai une responsabilité de mettre en avant un objet qui est fait à la main, qui représente des heures de travail et qui est le fruit de plusieurs artisans. Je veux qu’on puisse voir par les images tout le travail qu’il y a derrière. Et donc, mettre l’accent sur les détails de la fabrication car cela peut paraître anodin mais une couture sur cuir c’est très beau, régulier, c’est un savoir faire. Oui, le cuir est une matière qui me fascine car elle est vivante.

Quelles sont vos sources d’inspiration ?

C’est la question que je redoutais !. Je m’inspire de tellement de choses différentes, de secteurs différents. Je vais passer énormément de temps à regarder des photos sans savoir qui les a réalisées, c’est là où je m’en veux un peu mais je travaille dessus. Mais j’essaie de me nourrir d’un maximum d’images, de livres de voyage, de comptes Instagram de certains photographes. Je puise l’inspiration tous les jours, partout. Je m’inspire de toutes mes passions car je suis un passionné compulsif.

Quelles sont vos autres passions ?

Je me passionne pour beaucoup trop de choses ; je suis passionné de moto, de café, de design entre autre, tout ce qui touche à la matière en fait. Et parfois lors d’un shooting photo, mes passions m’inspirent et font ressurgir quelque chose de déjà vu ou vécu. Je suis peut-être volatile mais j’essaie de retranscrire dans mes photos ce que peut m’apporter la vie chaque jour.

Et il paraît que c’est beau une ville la nuit ?

Oui, c’est beau une ville la nuit ! Je vis beaucoup la nuit. Je découvre Paris au gré de mes sorties nocturnes parisiennes. Je fais des photos plus la nuit que le jour. C’est une méthode de découverte de la ville car je n’ai pas grandi à Paris.

Paris la nuit c’est une deuxième ville. C’est un autre rythme de vie, il y a toujours de la vie, peu important l’endroit il y a toujours du monde. Les endroits prennent un autre angle. C’est très souvent des sorties solitaires la nuit, Paris est plus fascinante la nuit.

Quel endroit de Paris vous a donné le plus d’émotions ?

Tous les quartiers sont beaux, différents à chaque fois, ils sont singuliers. La nuit permet de cacher souvent des choses qui ne sont pas très belles le jour. En fait j’ai du mal à mettre des mots dessus c’est peut-être pour ça que je les prends en photo.

Il n’y a pas forcement besoin de mots. C’est peut-être une facilité pour moi de prendre les choses en photo cela m’évite certainement de mettre des mots dessus.

Vous êtes aussi un amateur de cigare, la photo et le cigare font un bon mariage ?

Mes belles sorties dans Paris ça a été ça ; c’est une bonne paire de chaussures, un appareil photo et un cigare. Et je suis toujours seul.

Vous avez fait des photos de la Dame de Fer. Qu’est ce qu’elle donner quand on la capture en image ?

La Tour Eiffel est à chaque fois incroyable. On peut la voir tous les jours elle a cette capacité a être toujours fascinante. Sa construction est incroyable, elle hypnotise. Je me sens toujours petit quand je suis à ses pieds. Quand je suis en moto et que je passe, il y a un mouvement incroyable quand on regarde la Tour Eiffel de si bas et avec le mouvement elle change d’échelle. C’est quelque chose qui est très compliqué à reproduire en photo. Il y a deux ans, j’ai eu l’occasion d’y monter pour faire quelques clichés. Et là encore ça a été important pour moi de me focaliser sur des parties de la Tour Eiffel pour montrer sa construction. Et cela a été très important pour moi de photographier le moindre boulon qui appartient à ce monument parce que c’est une matière qui est folle. Elle est étourdissante. Car quand on est en haut dans ce monument énorme on ne peut que constater que l’homme est très petit. La Tour Eiffel c’est un ensemble. On voit la Tour Eiffel soit de très près ou de très loin, car elle donne beaucoup.

Vos photos sont toujours liées à la matière, à l’histoire …

Oui c’est très important pour moi. J’ai besoin encore une fois du contexte. J’ai fait récemment des photos pour des ballerines pliables, mais encore une fois je ne suis pas sur une commande de photos, c’est une rencontre avant tout, c’est un feeling, j’ai besoin de connaître l’histoire et pour me rendre compte à quel point l’artisan va tout donner pour son produit. Et de connaître aussi ses galères sur la création de son produit. Car c’est important pour moi montrer que le créateur ou l’artisan a passé du temps pour obtenir la perfection.

Je pense que c’est souvent dans les détails que l’on peut construire une histoire.

Comment arrivez-vous à travailler la simplicité de vos photos ?

Alors j’ai un côté très maniaque, mais j’ai du mal avec la surcharge. J’aime beaucoup la simplicité. L’envie surtout de créer quelque chose de très sobre sans parasite. L’épuré est très proche de l’élégance. Les deux sont liés.

Vous seriez capable de mettre de l’élégance dans un produit kitsch ?

Ça serait un intéressant défi ! Tout est rattaché à l’ambiance, on fait dire ce que l’on veut à un objet. Mais encore une fois la sobriété est un premier pas vers l’élégance et je la recherche à chaque fois. J’aime l’état brut des choses et donc cela demande que l’essentiel.

Mais je reprends le shooting avec la Maison Mauban, nous étions dans un appartement poussiéreux et en travaux et nous étions dans ce contexte pour sublimer des souliers sur-mesure !. J’ai beaucoup aime cet environnement très brut pour mettre en avant ces souliers. Un produit brut dans un contexte brut c’était juste parfait. Ce chantier nous a donné beaucoup de matière, une très belle lumière et on a réussi à faire à mon goût quelque chose d’élégant dans un contexte surprenant.

Quelles sont les personnalités qui vous inspirent ?

Malheureusement je n’en ai pas. Je suis venu par défaut à faire de la photo de mode et j’ai une très mauvaise mémoire des noms. Encore une fois les mots ne vont pas avec la photo !. Je suis tellement obsédé par l’image finale que j’en oublie certaines caractéristiques. Mais je m’en veux énormément.

Mais je n ai pas envie de me spécialiser dans un domaine, c’est mon côté touche à tout. Je sais qu’on ne peut pas être bon partout mais une expérience va influencer une autre donc j’ai besoin de tous ces univers.

Un voyage en Islande va m’influencer dans mon travail avec les marques, comme la sobriété et l’élégance de la photo d’un produit m’a influencé dans mes photos de voyages. Je pense que cela peut créer une signature, le fait de ne pas se spécialiser dans un domaine. Mais aussi peut être parfois de m’étaler.

Mais je garde un regard très critique sur mon travail, et je suis très ouvert à la critique.

Vous auriez une baguette magique, qu’est-ce que vous aimeriez améliorer dans votre travail ?

J’aurais une baguette magique, ça serait de retranscrire à coup sûr une émotion qu’on peut avoir en voyant un produit. De montrer l’émotion que ressent un passant dans la rue, ce n’est pas palpable et tant mieux. Je m’efforce à toujours donner cette émotion. Chaque sortie photo est un travail sur mon travail. Je laisse aussi le temps au temps. Il faut de la patience pour la photo. Et ça a été le premier travail sur moi-même ; la patience.

Je regarde les photos d’un shooting deux ou trois jours après, parce que j’ai immortalisé avec mon appareil et j’ai photographié avec mes yeux. Et il faut que lorsque je revois mes photos cinq jours après j’arrive à matcher les deux. Plus les photos sont traitées rapidement moins je vais être content du résultat.

C’est toujours l’importance de transmettre ce feeling donc j’ai besoin de ce temps de repos et surtout pour retransmettre ce que moi j’ai pu ressentir.

Je suis aussi obsédé par le temps, les journées sont trop courtes et en même temps j’ai besoin de temps. Il faut donné le temps aux choses de se reposer pour y revenir et pour essayer de retrouver ce qui s’est passé. C’est la quête de tout photographe je pense. J’essaie d’avoir suffisamment de recul pour me réaliser.

C’est à l’opposé de mon métier dans le digital où tout est très instantané, où tout va très vite. Le digital est compatible dans la photo mais ça a vulgarisé et ça a blessé la photo.

Qu’est ce qu’on comprend quand on travaille avec un appareil argentique ?

On comprend comment immortaliser un instant sur une pellicule, on comprend les trois facteurs qui vont faire qu’une photo va être réussie ; la lumière, la sensibilité et le temps. L’argentique permet de se focaliser dessus.

C’est dans la contrainte où on est le plus créatif, cela a permis plus de simplicité dans mon travail. C’est une satisfaction personnelle, c’est toujours dingue de développer son film soi-même.

La photo m’aide ou elle m’évite à dire ce que je ne saurais pas expliquer. Je préfère raconter ce que je vis en image. Et la plus belle des victoires c’est que la personne qui regarde l’image ait la même émotion.

La photographie a été révélatrice. Cela a été un refuge et une manière de raconter. Je regrette juste de ne pas avoir eu un déclic avec la photo plus tôt. Pour immortaliser les choses de la vie sur lesquelles on ne peut pas revenir.

Un dernier mot pour conclure …

Nous sommes dans un superbe endroit de Paris, dans un endroit d’art, entouré d’arbres merci pour cette rencontre et ce qui est génial c’est le fruit d’une rencontre commune.

Leo Piastra, light, sensitivity and time

Leo Piastra is a photographer who prefers to tell emotions, the matter through photography. Words are not enough to immortalize so he captures moments or moods to bring out the essential.

Simplicity is for him close to elegance. It is with all simplicity that Leo has put words on his photos.

How did it begin?

With my father who made me take my first contact with the film and it was a way between him and me to bind us. He gave me a medium-sized box with which I could take a photo of my nephew. From this day he really gave me the patience of framing, triggering.

A photographer has a special relationship with the trigger of the device. There is something very powerful with a medium format box.

After these first shots, we continued the experience in the darkroom to develop the film and make the print of the portrait of my nephew.

The second experiment went through the hardware approach and I discovered the digital box with all its advantages and disadvantages.

I set goals to understand the technique of photography. My dad gave me my first digital camera with which I had a not very good quality optics so I adapted the silver lenses on it. It was a completely manual learning and it was this constraint that forced me to understand what I was doing with a camera. I had a silver print with the photo but with the advantage of digital. So the advantage of being able to miss, to see directly how I had managed a photo. I love to learn by myself and I need to understand how something works before exploiting the object I use.

After came the practice; go out with a fixed focus all the time and trigger very often in the street.

The picture has always accompanied me to make me grow day by day. There is not a day without making a photo. The photo is simply obsessive.

To tell you, I love cooking, and I always have a virtual trigger in my head that inspires me with beautiful images, always this desire to freeze the moment and highlight a material or atmosphere.

So it started almost 10 years ago.

What was your first photo shooting experience?

The first time I had the chance to put it into practice was with Maison Mauban 3 years ago.

With Edouard Quinchon, we built the image of Mauban. We got along very well and both of us wanted to highlight the details of the product but behind a background, a story that seems important to me to convey an emotion. And after, things were done in a natural way, I met other brands.

How do you get to sublimate a product?

It is above all to highlight the manufacture, the material of the product. In order to really have the feeling of touching the material, to project yourself with the product. It is also to present the product in a context of use, and to build a story. I give great importance to details. For example, if we take the plastic material, there are several shades of this material and so I try to bring out these differences to be able to touch with the eyes.

It's the fusion of manufacturing and material that interests me.

What is the object that fascinated you most to work?

The shoe is an object that gives me emotion. At the same time shooting because I try to sublimate the maximum material and transcribe this touch. Leather is an incredible material and it must be felt in the image. And I have a responsibility to put forward an object that is handmade, which represents hours of work and is the result of several craftsmen. I want to see through the images all the work he has behind. And so, to focus on the details of the manufacturing because it may seem innocuous but a stitch on leather is very beautiful, regular, it is a know-how. Yes, leather is a subject that fascinates me because it is alive.

What are your sources of inspiration?

This is the question I feared! I am inspired by so many different things, different sectors. I will spend a lot of time looking at pictures without knowing who made them, that's where I blame myself a little but I work on it. But I try to feed myself a maximum of images, travel books, Instagram accounts of some photographers. I get inspiration every day, everywhere. I am inspired by all my passions because I am a compulsive enthusiast.

What are your other passions?

I am passionate about so many things; I am passionate about motorcycle, coffee, design among other things, everything related to the material in fact. And sometimes during a photo shoot, my passions inspire me and bring back something already seen or lived. I may be volatile but I try to transcribe in my photos what life can bring me every day.

And it seems that it's beautiful a city at night?

Yes, it's beautiful a city at night! I live a lot at night. I discover Paris at the option of my Paris night outings. I take pictures more at night than during the day. It is a method of discovering the city because I did not grow up in Paris.

Paris at night is a second city. It is another rhythm of life, there is always life, little importance the place there is always the world. Places take another angle. It is very often solitary outings at night, Paris is more fascinating at night.

Which place in Paris gave you the most emotions?

All neighborhoods are beautiful, different each time, they are singular. The night can often hide things that are not very beautiful during the day. In fact I have trouble putting words on it maybe that's why I take pictures.

There is no need for words. It may be a facility for me to take pictures of it, it certainly avoids me to put words on it.

You are also a cigar lover, the photo and the cigar make a good marriage?

My beautiful outings in Paris it was that; it's a good pair of shoes, a camera and a cigar. And I'm always alone.

You make pictures of the Iron Lady. What does it give when we capture it in image?

The Eiffel Tower is incredible every time. We can see her every day she has this ability to be always fascinating. Its construction is incredible, it hypnotizes. I always feel small when I am at his feet. When I'm on a motorcycle and I pass, there is an incredible movement when you look at the Eiffel Tower so low and with the movement it changes scale. It is something that is very complicated to reproduce in photo. Two years ago, I had the opportunity to go up there to do some clichés. And again it was important for me to focus on parts of the Eiffel Tower to show its construction. And it was very important for me to photograph any bolt that belongs to this monument because it's crazy. She is stunning. For when one is up in this huge monument one can only note that the man is very small. The Eiffel Tower is a set. We can see the Eiffel Tower from very close or very far, because it gives a lot.

Your photos are always related to the subject, the story ...

Yes it's very important to me. I need context again. I recently made photos for foldable ballerinas, but again I'm not on a photo order, it's a meeting above all, it's a feeling, I need to know the story and to realize how much the craftsman will give everything for his product. And to know also his galleys on the creation of his product. Because it's important for me to show that the creator or craftsman has spent time to achieve perfection.

I think it's often in the details that we can build a story.

How do you manage to work on the simplicity of your photos?

So I have a very manic side, but I have trouble with the overload. I really like simplicity. The desire especially to create something very simple without parasite. The purified is very close to elegance. Both are linked.

You would be able to put elegance in a kitsch product?

It would be an interesting challenge! Everything is attached to the atmosphere, it makes you say what you want to an object. But again sobriety is a first step towards elegance and I search for it every time. I like the raw state of things and so it only requires the essentials.

But I resume shooting with Maison Mauban, we were in a dusty apartment and under construction and we were in this context to sublimate tailor-made shoes! I really like this very raw environment to put forward these shoes. A raw product in a raw context it was just perfect. This project gave us a lot of material, a beautiful light and we managed to do something elegant for my taste in a surprising context.

What are the personalities that inspire you?

Unfortunately I do not have one. I came by default to do fashion photography and I have a very bad memory of names. Again the words do not go with the photo! I am so obsessed with the final image that I forget certain features. But I feel very angry.

But I do not want to specialize in a field, it's my side touches everything. I know we can not be good everywhere but one experience will influence another so I need all these universes.

A trip to Iceland will influence me in my work with brands, as the sobriety and elegance of the photo of a product influenced me in my travel photos. I think it can create a signature, not specializing in a field. But also sometimes can be spread out.

But I keep a very critical eye on my work, and I am very open to criticism.

You would have a magic wand, what would you like to improve in your work?

I would have a magic wand, it would be to transcribe for sure an emotion that can be seen when seeing a product. Showing the emotion a passer-by feels on the street is not palpable and so much the better. I strive to always give that emotion. Every photo shoot is a job on my job. I also leave time to time. It takes patience for the photo. And that was the first work on myself; patience.

I look at the photos of a shoot two or three days later, because I immortalized with my camera and photographed with my eyes. And it is necessary that when I see my photos 5 days later I manage to match both. The faster the photos are processed, the less I'm happy with the result.

It is always important to transmit this feeling so I need this time of rest and especially to retransmit what I could feel.

I am also obsessed with the weather, the days are too short and at the same time I need time. We have to give time to rest to come back and try to find out what happened. It's the quest of any photographer I think. I try to have enough perspective to realize myself.

This is the opposite of my job in the digital where everything is very instant, where everything goes very fast. The digital is compatible in the photo but it vulgarized and it hurt the photo.

What do we understand when working with a film camera?

We understand how to immortalize a moment on a film, we understand the three factors that will make a photo will be successful; light, sensitivity and time. The film makes it possible to focus on it.

It is in the constraint where we are the most creative, it allowed more simplicity in my work. It's a personal satisfaction, it's always crazy to develop your own movie.

The photo helps me or it prevents me to say what I cannot explain. I prefer to tell what I live in image. And the most beautiful of victories is that the person who looks at the image has the same emotion.

The photography was revealing. It was a refuge and a way of telling. I just regret not having a click with the picture earlier. To immortalize the things of life that we cannot come back to.
